What went on between Zuko and Ozai before the fateful banishment?

XD Just discuss the relationship....
Like, do you think Ozai ever once loved Zuko?

According to Zuko, Ozai didn't.

Perhaps he was just hard on him as a child. Not saying I disagree with you, but I'm throwing things out there.

Zuko was most likely raised by someone else. An attendant or something. He would have been raised to idolize his father, who, in turn, looked down on him for being "weak."

Like I said, torment. Emotional torment. Zuko has a heart. We've all seen it, even if he's lost sight of it. So Ozai, being his father, was obviously someone Zuko wanted to be loved by. Who doesn't want to get in good with their fathers? So when Ozai didn't return his feelings of affection, Zuko just tried harder, and his affectional nature slipped out too often, causing him to be considered weak.

Zuko seems to had to struggle for Ozai's love. It seems to me that Zuko was always overshadowed by Azula, the fact that she seems to be a firebending prodigy and everything. Zuko wanted to live up to his father's expectations and to be loved by him. It's the thing that makes "The Storm" so sad to watch, the fact that Zuko tries so hard and wants to be loved by his father only to be considered to be weak and banished from his home. I could go on more of this, but it's getting late. So I'll just end it here for the time being.

OK this is going to be short for now because I need to go start homework... but I think Ozai NEVER loved Zuko in the first place as in I think its a possibility that Ozai banished him not only because "he was a coward, disrespectful, and showed shameful weakness" but because he had the opportunity to finally get rid of him for reasons that those other people could understand.

I think Ozai was always a cold-hearted jerk. Zuko, however, really seemed to care about his father. No matter what happened or how Ozai had hurt him, Zuko remained loyal to him. thats the sad part. it was seemingly a one-sided love. Zuko loved his father, but his father was too blinded by his own vanity, pride, power and reputation to bother to see his son as anything more than a failure. Zuko seems to be a bit slack in his firebending ability compared to the rest of his family, and I think that may be why Ozai hates him so much. or part of the reason. Look at his line: Iroh is a master, Azula is most definitely a master, and no doubt so is Ozai-hes Fire Lord. poor kid didnt stand a chance with such a shallow father and such a powerful bloodline.

I think Zuko's perfectly capable of being more powerful than Ozai. He just hasn't realized it yet. I'm positive he could be! Like, in a flashback I was writing for one of my fanfics, Zuko had friends, a loving mother and uncle...it all ends there. I mean, friends: cool. Mother(I made her up! ^^): Cool. Uncle: Cool. But having a sister and a father that absolutely hate your guts pretty much kills the love from others. And we don't know that his mother is, or was alive. We don't know that he had friends. It was just wishful thinking. I feel really bad for Zu-Zu now. Probably his mother is or was just as ruthless as Ozai. ;.;

How could Ozai not love his son? I mean, its usually the son that takes over the Over-Lords place when he dies, you know? But then again, Azula is much more powerful and it does seem like Ozai likes her a lot better. ...As most of you guys have already pointed out. But you know, I'm just curious about one thing.
Don't Read the Folllowing if You Haven't Seen The Newest Episode!!
When Zuko is talking to that girl in the last episode, and they are talking about the war and stuff at the table and how their fathers are both in the war, didn't it seem like Zuko felt... I don't know. He just looked really...Oh, what's the word? Gah! He just seemed really, like, not depressed exactly. He seemed...ashamed? ASHAMED. To me, he seemed ashamed when they were talking about it. Did it seem that way to anyone else?

"ashamed" isn't the word I'd use......I can't think of the word I'd use, but i know it's not ashamed......something similar but not quite the same.......
